Adding and subtracting fractions
To add or subtract fractions with different denominators, first convert them to a common denominator by cross-multiplying, then add or subtract the numerators.
The result is then reduced to its simplest form by dividing both numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor (GCD).
Multiplying fractions
Multiplying fractions is the most direct operation — multiply the numerators together, and multiply the denominators together.
Dividing fractions
Dividing by a fraction is the same as multiplying by its reciprocal (flipping the numerator and denominator of the second fraction).
Simplifying and mixed numbers
Every result on this page is automatically reduced using the greatest common divisor, so you always get the simplest possible fraction. When the numerator is larger than the denominator, the tool also shows the equivalent mixed number (a whole number plus a proper fraction).
Frequently asked questions
Can I use negative numbers?
Yes — enter a negative numerator or denominator and the calculator handles the sign correctly, always normalizing so the denominator of the result is positive.
Why is my result shown as a whole number with no denominator shown as 1?
When a fraction simplifies exactly to a whole number, the denominator becomes 1 — for example, 6/3 simplifies to 2/1, shown simply as the whole number 2.
